Part of the federal and state discussions and strategies around combating the opioid epidemic.
ASA published “Medical Cannabis in America – The Medical Cannabis Briefing Book, 115th Congress” to provide members of Congress and POTUS the necessary information to make well-informed decisions regarding medical cannabis policy.
ASA has lobbied on behalf of medical marijuana legalization on both state and federal levels including:
ASA successfully lobbied Congress to extend the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment, , which prohibits the US Department Justice from spending money to interfere in state medical cannabis programs – including prosecutions, civil asset forfeiture and more.
Save ASA delivered a letter on behalf of thirteen patient-based organizations urging ranking members of committees in the House and Senate to allow a vote on the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and Respect States (CARERS) Act(S.683, H.R. 1583), which will finally harmonize federal and state medical cannabis laws.
ASA’s federal team successfully lobbied Senate offices to pass Senator Leahy’s Commerce Justice and Sciences (CJS) appropriations amendment to continue prohibiting the DOJ from interfering in state medical cannabis programs.
ASA coordinated advocates to hold simultaneous rallies across the United States with our Washington, DC rally to call attention the potential of medical cannabis in mitigating the opioid crisis.
How Americans for Safe Access is making a difference
Federal Advocacy Project
ASA’s National Office, located in Washington, DC, advocates for safe access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research to better meet the immediate needs of patients, medical professionals, and researchers. They help to broaden support for medical cannabis on Capitol Hill, and within executive agencies and national institutes. ASA is the only organization in our nation’s Capitol working exclusively to advance safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research.
End Pain, Not Lives Campaign
Americans for Safe Access and the U.S. Pain Foundation launched the End Pain Not Lives campaign on November 1, 2017, to address the root of the opioid epidemic in the United States. Current public health policies focus solely on downstream strategies and criminalizing patients and medical professionals. Yet the research shows a nearly 25% decrease of opioid overdose deaths in states with medical cannabis laws. However, medical cannabis is not option for all patients due to the federal-state legal conflict, inadequacies in state laws, and lack of medical professional and patient education. ASA is promoting the legalization of medical marijuana to help mediate the opioid crisis.
ASA’s state campaigns draw out strategic plans for improving safe access in individual states across the nation. This includes coordinating with diverse coalitions in each state, providing model state legislation and regulations, monitoring legislative and regulatory actions nationwide, drafting and analyzing legislative and regulatory proposals with representatives and agencies and keeping ASA members informed about breaking developments.
Legal and Medical Advocacy
ASA provides legal resources for patients on topics ranging on how to become eligible for medical marijuana, how to defend a medical marijuana case, and civil issues such as employment, housing, and child custody. ASA also provides information on how to talk to your doctor about medical cannabis, basic science, and how to safely use medical cannabis.
